Allogeneic CAR T-cell therapy: New hope for people with autoimmune diseases? (DE)

The University Hospital Düsseldorf (UKD) and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf have launched a new Phase 1 study investigating allogeneic CAR T-cell therapy for systemic autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, myositis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Unlike conventional CAR T-cell approaches that use a patient’s own cells, this therapy is based on T cells from healthy donors. These cells are genetically engineered to target disease-driving B cells and are designed to be readily available for treatment. The study aims to determine the optimal dose and further assess the safety and potential of this innovative approach.
The trial is being conducted through close interdisciplinary collaboration between rheumatology, hematology, and cell therapy experts at the Düsseldorf Center for Cell and Gene Therapy, together with national and international partner centers.
